Displaying Variables

Displaying Variables
Author:  Bob Price
Date: 20.12.2007 17:41:25
Hi

Unless I am missing something simple, does anyone know how to display the contents of a variable ?

I am wanting to capture some text at the start of a module and then display it at the end of the module

Any thoughts please

Sussed it. Use a simple text box and enclose the varibales (or objects) in double curly brackets {{#var_name}}

I've been looking for that for ages

Form with an action?

I'm looking to do the same thing

Duhhhhhh and I was trying much more complex coding and ending up getting nowhere. Blindingly simple when you think about it!! Thanks for that one Bob :)

LuoO Just use a form field and change the variable name in properties to whatever you want it to be.

Yep, just use the form field and then displayed the variable.

This software will do so much when you get down beneath the surface.

I must be missing something (and feeling a little dumn now LOL!).

I can't seem to get this to work - all I get in the text box is exactly what I typed expecting the variable to show up.

Example: {{#var_name}}

Is the variable that you have set up set to work in the whole module or slide only ? I had the same problem when I tried it first.

Hi Guys,
Slav replied to this problem and said to use a text box but not the shadow type.
Don't know why his reply is not in this thread but check the type of text box you are using!

I have a three page test I'm running, in slide 1 I put a "text input box" with the default name of "input_var"; the variable scope is set to module. In the 3rd slide I placed a plain ol' text box with "{{input_var}}" in it. I still have the same issue when I run view module.

Do I need to do something else in frame one (i.e. have an action on a button) to save the variable for recall in slide 3 ?

The text box needs to be one of the two from the textboxes in the object libray. It does not work is you just click on the text tool.

Also you need to make sure you tab out of the input text box to ensure that the variable is set.

Hope that helps.

I have been having the same problem. All I want is to get a Student's name on the first module slide, store it in a variable and display it on the last module slide. I have followed this thread and I am still unable to display the data instead of the variable name. Could you assist me further.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Bob any chance of a copy of your test module as it seems to have helped others out?

Thanks a lot

This has got to be the biggest strand here Bob and obviously a popular topic.
Really it should be posted as a sample in the showcase area, but possibly as it is more 'bread and butter' there is going to be some reluctance to do that.
Might it be worth the effort of building a more user focussed website that would contain:
basic info
Short tutorials on basic topics
Short tutorials on advanced topics
Shortcuts
Hints and tips
plus an archive of sample modules with lots of annotation

The facebook idea is all well and good but I don't want to have to plaster more info about myself out on the web.

<< I'd be happy to build and post a web site for this, I've been playing around with a few ideas and designs already. I just need a cheap high download limit LAMPS server. Worst case I guess I could stick it on my home networks DMZ.
I'm sure that their are enough users who would contribute snippets to make a useful resource.

Nick,

I agree with you whole-heartedly. As a very new user, I really do wish there was a place for tutorials and code snippets to share. The manual is fairly good--but for a brand new user, a tutorial would be better. I am a former Authorware user and there was a great website, such as you are describing, for the authorware community and proved to be an immense help--for newbies as well as the experienced user.

I know I'd be happy to contribute once I know what I'm doing.

http://nickj.php0h.com/
Should do the job, unfortunately it's a free hosting site so there's an ad tagged in at the base of the page. Bonus is full PHP and SQL availibility so it has potential.
Once I have a little bit more content I'll formally flag it up on the forum here.
LOL I'll sign you up
