linking a word doc
  View type:
I know this must be a simple process but how do i link a word doc to a bit of text.

For example - click here for more info

[]

Hi, As you say a WORD DOC I assume you mean you want a trigger in the module to open a M$ Word document that is external to, or outside of, your module.

For a few reasons this isn't a terribly good idea, the document may not be where you think it is, there might not be the software to display it or the OS or browser might block the action.

It would be easier to keep this documents text within the module, this would allow you to use a pop up or a hidden text field to show it.

For using pop ups the 'Showcase' has a nice sample you can look at and see how it can be used.

Hi Nick,

Yeah i see what you mean, its just that the extra info that needs to be included is rather text heavy.
For example discrimination act etc.

What would be the method for opening an external word file so i could test this out.

As long as you can guarantee where the file is just make a hyperlink to it. In a single organisation link to a file on a server somewhere would be best. At worst you could bundle the file into the CD burn if you have to run from CD. On AICC or SCORMS though ALWAYS use external references (objects outside of the module) to files (hyperlink to source)or cite reference for user to pursue.

Having the hyperlink and clicked it assuming the OS knows that file type is linked to the correct app it will open it. Again that's if the PC has the app installed, else deep confusion.

This could be done using a standard button or within a body of text by entering html mode and adding an 'a href' to open in a child page (default will be the parent).
You'll find details on html tags all over the net so I won't explain here.
