It uses the standard AICC and SCORM API's to manage transactions with an LMS. What the LMS will use from the data sent by courselab depends on the LMS, the API used and what the LMS is capable of.
Any database interaction is made at the LMS, the courselab generated modules are just run with the AICC or SCORM wrapper by the LMS.
If you want to read up on what the various SCORM API's (mainly 1.2, 1.3, 2004) look at the ADL web site ( http://www.adlnet.gov/ ) or google scorm api.
