Test Timers

Please excuse me, I'm new to Courselab....
I need to create a test with questions that need individual graphics etc. to explain the question. I therefore assume I must create this test over multiple slides. That's no trouble, but how can I set an overall timeout for the entire test duration (i.e. 30 minutes)? I know hoe to set a timer for each individual question ot for a test object, but I can't see how this can be done and it's very common in our application. Many thanks for your expert help>[:)]

Hi, Jeff!

There's no such object (global timer) in current CourseLab version. But you can use pictures attached to test questions in Test object. The other possibility is mentioned by Nick - you can use onmouseover/out or onclick links in question text (I mean in Test object), that will open popups with extra info. This way is more flexible.

Please note, that if you do big test, then you should take in account LMS that you are using - if it is SCORM 1.2 or AICC, then it is recommended to avoid tests, that longer than 30-40 questions. It is because of data field limits in this standards. SCORM 2004 has greater field sizes, so SCORM 2004 LMS should store data of approx. 400-500 questions (though it is quite insane test [:)]).

Slav,
Thanks for the information. I can see the 'Question Image' function in the question properties within a test object. I browsed to a graphics file and added it (in fact I tried it with several image files). When I preview the slide, the questions work OK but there is no graphic displayed. Also, is there any way to select the position of the graphic? I'm obviously missing something, but I don't know what and there doesn't seem to be any mention of this 'Question Image' in the help or user guides. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, Geoff!

Question image field is located in question dialog window (Question tab) of Test object (i.e. the dialog that opens when you insert new question in the Test). Here you can select the image, that will be shown when this question is displayed.
But there is another option you must switch on for pictures to be displayed. It is Display question image checkbox on Test object Limitation and scoring tab.
Note, that there is known bug in Test object (in 2.3 version): when 2 questions with pictures are displayed consequently, previous question picture will not be erased. Quick workaround is to alternate question with pictures with no-picture question. Bug is fixed in 2.4 version (will be available soon).

Unfortunately, position of picture cannot be adjusted - picture is always at left from the question block.

Hi Geoff, There are quite a few methods you can use to add extra content to the page that's only displayed when it's needed. You could add the graphs or other materials as pop ups or by using the page comments. Careful on that page comments use as 2.3 seems to forget to shift the images you use to the published module).
Assuming the test sequence is linear then you might be able to grab the time per page or used per question and sum it. Use that value to check against a threshold time for ending the users progress by jumping to another page.
